![]() CAPTAIN AND CREW: Alloa Golf Club Sheila Travers was appointed as captain last week. She will take the helm in January. Sheila hopes to guide the club through what has been a difficult financial time for golf at the amateur level in Scotland with some ground-breaking initiatives. A player with a handicap of ten, Sheila is a past ladies captain and twice ladies club champion. She has also captained the Midland Division Ladies Vets and so comes with great experience of leadership. Already, her stewardship of the club’s Forward Strategy Group has produced an ambitious program of social events for the remainder of the winter and has also drawn up plans for a complete refurbishment of the club’s locker room facilities in order to service members’ needs and attract visitors for many seasons to come. Founded in 1891, the club is one of the oldest in the county and is in a lovely setting beneath the Ochil Hills. Sheila is confident that her female talent for multi-tasking can drive her along with her new enthusiastic team and the golf club and course forward. On taking office, she said “It is nearly 120 years since Alloa Golf Club was formed and almost as long since the club moved to Schawpark where the course was designed by James Braid. “I would like to think that he would approve of the 21st century membership electing their first Lady Captain of the Club.” Initial indications are that her first drive is straight down the middle.
